After reading Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Bradford Simon worked in the Aerospace and Computing industries before joining the BBC in 1988. Here he has worked in Local Radio, Network Radio, the World Service, as well as a short stint with the British Forces Broadcasting Service in the Far East. In 2002 he led part of the team that launched the BBC’s 5 new digital radio stations and doubled the number of transmitters in the UK DAB network. This was followed by the first phase of a project to re furbish and complete re engineer the BBC’s 1932 Art Deco Head Quarters, Broadcasting House, in the heart of London’s West end.
He is now one of the BBC’s Technology Partners, managing a team who provide technical expertise across the corporation, with his own work currently focused on large scale integration of software systems, the restructuring of the BBC’s in house technology department, Surround Sound for HD television and the carbon footprint of the BBC’s technology.
Simon is Freeman of the City of London and a committee member fro the Lime Street ward.
